Drs. Gurumurthy Hiremath (Pediatrics) and Amr El-Bokl (Pediatric Cardiology fellow) worked with Dr. Carlye Lauff (Product Design) and undergraduate student Levi Skelton (College of Design) to create an innovative product to help educate children on congenital heart disease with efforts to ease parental stress. The product? A stuffed octopus with a 3D heart ventricle inside.

Using echocardiography—visual ultrasound of the heart—the research team was able to show that “In this community-based cohort study, lower left atrial function was associated with higher risk of dementia.” Dr. Lin Yee Chen (Medicine) is the principal investigator of the NIH grant that funded this study.
A team of scientists from our Medical School, the University of Texas Health San Antonio, and the Biomedical Research Institute of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas in Greece published findings in Molecular Psychiatry, showing that the disruption of a circadian clock gene may be involved in the development of autism spectrum disorder.
