Dean's Welcome Message

Last month was busy, exciting, and challenging. It was also a time when we saw the results of the outstanding work being done across the Medical School in the results of the Blue Ridge Rankings, in the acknowledgement of the Task Force that we are critical to the state, and in our progress in our clinical relationship. Please take a moment to start March off by learning more about what's going on in your Medical School.

Supporting Researchers with Passion and Experience

When Dr. Clara Smoniewski began her role as a research professional in the Office of Research Support, Duluth campus, in August, she was entering into a position unlike any she’d ever had before. A molecular biologist by training, Dr. Smoniewski’s career had taken place primarily behind the bench, but now, she would make an impact on research in a whole new way.
Improving Early Autism Screening

Dr. Casey Burrows, an assistant professor in pediatrics and a clinical psychologist at the University of Minnesota Medical School, is at the forefront of research to enhance the early identification of autism-related concerns in females and underserved populations. "This topic is so important because screening is really the first step in identifying concerns and getting children on a path toward the support they might need."

Randy Shaver Cancer Research & Community Fund Grant
Four Department of Surgery faculty members were named 2023 Randy Shaver Cancer Research & Community Fund Grant recipients for their cutting-edge projects aimed at making a difference in Minnesota's cancer community.
Dr. Jose Debes

Dr. Debes recently published his book "Treatment and Management of Tropical Liver Disease," which is the first and only book about tropical liver diseases in the world.
Dr. Alon Herschhorn
published research
Dr. Herschhorn recently published two articles on his work with HIV-1 in the American Society for Microbiology's Applied and Environmental Microbiology and Nature Portfolio Journal Vaccines.
Dr. Kristen Mark

In January, Dr. Mark was welcomed as the Director for the Center for Women's Health Research. In this role, she also serves as a Co-Principal Investigator of the UMN K12 BIRCWH grant.
Dr. Madhuri Rao

Dr. Rao has been selected as the new International Committe Co-Chair for the Women in Thoracic Surgery, the only organization dedicated to the support and advancement of women in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Shannon Sullivan
center for women's health research and k12 building interdisciplinary research careers in women's health program scholar
Dr. Sullivan is the newest BIRCWH scholar with the Center for Women's Health Research. Her research combines laboratory science and epidemiologic techniques to unravel the complexities of human health and disease.
Dr. Brendon Tervo-Clemmens

Dr. Tervo-Clemmens was named an Association for Psychological Science Rising Star. The APS Rising Star designation recognizes researchers whose innovative work has alreay advanced the field and signals great potential for their continued contributions.
UMN Urology Students
2024 urology match
The Department of Urology is proud to announce that all five UMN students who enterd the Urology Match, Devante Delbrune, Kassandra Dindinger-Hill, Efemona Famati, Matthew Holten, and Casey Norton successfully matched with a Urology residency program. The Urology match is one of the most competitive in the match process.
