Dean's Welcome Message

We did it! Another academic year is in the books (pun intended), and the season of celebrations and commencements is upon us. As faculty and staff, it's easy to simply recognize it as part of the annual cycle of transition: sending off one group of students and trainees while getting ready for new and returning ones in the fall. I hope we take a moment, not only to celebrate the success of our students and trainees, but to also celebrate seeing the rewards of our work in the launching of all this new talent into the world. Thank you for all you do for our education programs, our students, and our trainees. I hope your summer is off to a great start!

Reflections from the First Graduating Class of the BA/MD Scholars Program

2024 Commencement marks the first graduating class of the Medical School's BA/MD Scholars Program. These students were part of the program's very first cohort and have spent the past seven years working toward their goals of becoming a physician. For one of our graduating BA/MD scholars, Amera Hassan, the moment feels surreal, but she knows that this is where she's meant to be all her life.
Orthopedic Innovation Improves Healing

Dr. Paul Hoogervorst's new Anser Clavicle Pin device is changing the face of orthopedic surgery. The pin is a minimally invasive solution designed to promote fast and less traumatic recoveries from midshaft clavicle fractures. The Anser Clavicle Pin sets itself apart from other devices by using relative stability which allows bone fragments to undergo a natural healing process.

2024 Medical School Award Recipients
The Office of Medical Education announced their list of award winners across medical education. 38 students, faculty, affiliates, and staff were recognized across a range of fields, from teaching to research to mentorship. Congratulations to all!
Drs. Bradley Benson and Sara North
National Academies of Practice Inductees
Drs. Bradley Benson and Sara North were two of four U of M faculty members inducted into the National Academies of Practice in March. The prestigious honor acknowledges their outstanding achievements and recognizes them as leaders in their professions.
Dr. Detlef Heck
2025-2026 President of Endocrine Society
Dr. Detlef Heck delivered the Keynote presentation at the Second Global Meeting of the Posterior Fossa Soceity in Memphis, TN in April. His presentation focused on his pioneering work on the coordination of rhythms as a fundamental principle of cerebellar motor and non-motor functions.
Dr. Cynthia Howard
Gold Headed Cane Award
Recognized as a symbol of excellence among physicians, the Gold Headed Cane has been presented by the Department of Pediatrics to over 40 Minnesota pediatricians. Dr. Cynthia Howard was named its 44th recipient in March.
Dr. Robert Levy
Minnesota Department of Human Services Grant
Dr. Robert Levy has been awarded a $900k grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, in conjunction with the Opioid Epidemic Response Advisory Council, to enhance workforce development and training for healthcare professionals caring for patients with opioid use disorder.
