Dean's Welcome Message

This is an exciting month at the University of Minnesota as we welcome President Rebecca Cunningham. Dr. Cunningham is an emergency medicine and health sciences researcher who recognizes the impact a top-tier research University can have on health indicators for a state. I had the honor of touring the four facilities that make up the University of Minnesota Medical Center with her last week. It was an opportunity to highlight the broad impact of our work, from our graduates and trainees to our research and clinical practice. And we are being recognized for our impact: please join me in celebrating the 216 faculty members who were honored as 2024 Top Doctors by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine!

Helping Patients Smile After Paralysis

“Oh, I can’t look at that,” 26-year-old Brianna Eli winces when she sees a photo taken of her just before surgery. Much of the left side of her face was paralyzed, making it difficult to eat, drink, blink, talk and even smile. Now, two years into recovery from a nerve transfer, Brianna boldly shares her story in front of a camera.

Promotion and Tenure Recipients

Congratulations to the 128 faculty members who received promotion or tenure this year! A reception was held last month to honor all recipients.

Menopause Society Research Mentoring Program
The Center for Women's Health Research and Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility Seed Grant Scholar Robin Austin was selected for a two-year research mentorship program through the Menopause Society and will be presenting a poster abstract at the Annual Conference in September.

Robert P Hebbel Research Day DEI Awards
At the 21st Annual Robert P Hebbel Research Days, Drs. Alejandra Gutierrez Banal and Sarah Lofgren received DEI Awards. Dr. Gutierrez Banal was awarded the Diversity Award for Research Equity, and Dr. Lofgren received the Dr. Anne Joseph Early-Career Research Award.

Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility Director Dr. Shailey Prasad received the 2024 Gabriel Smilkstein Award for his outstanding contributions to the growth and development family medicine education around the world.

Institute on the Environment Impact Goals Funding
The University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment selected Dr. Evan Roberts to receive funding support for his work creating a public-use Minnesota Zoning Atlas and increasing the understanding of land-use regulations within the state.
