Dean's Welcome Message

The first official days of summer are approaching quickly. We know that the need for high-quality care doesn't slow down when the weather warms up, so our work at the Medical School doesn't slow down either. As we continue our clinical care, research, and training this summer, I hope you are able to find time to care for yourself, too, to rest, restore, and reflect on all the great achievements you make possible. You are improving the lives of people in Minnesota and beyond every day. Thank you for all that you do! Enjoy this all-too-brief season of warmth!

Castle Connolly Best Health System for GI in Minnesota
The U of M and M Health Fairview Division for Gastroenterololgy, Helpatology, and Nutrition was named best in the state for GI care by Castle Connolly, one of the most trusted sources for identifying excellence in doctors nationally.
Dr. Mustafa al'Absi
National Institutes of Health R01 Grant
Dr. al'Absi was awarded an R01 grant from the NIH for his collaborative and multidisciplinary research on developing new and better ways to help people contend with stress.

drexel university executive leadership program
Two U of M faculty members, Dr. Benish and Dr. Chow, were accepted into Drexel University's Executive Leadership Program for women in the Healthcare and Academic Medicine categories, respectively.

Surgical Education Leadership Appointments
Congratulations to Drs. Brunsvold and Kendrick for their new roles! Effective July 1, Dr. Brunsvold will be Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Surgery, and Dr. Kendrick will be Program Director for the General Surgery Residency.
Dr. Stephen Jameson
President of the American Association of Immunologists
Dr. Jameson has been elected the 108th president of AAI. He was chosen for his work as a distinguished immunologist and esteemed member of the AAI Council.
Dr. Peter Nalin
Association of Departments of Family Medicine Board of Directors
Dr. Nalin has been elected nationally by his peers to serve on the Board of Directors of the ADFM. The ADFM supports academic departments of family medicine in care, education, scholarship, and advocacy to improve health for all.
Ora Raymond
Published first author research in peer-reviewed journal
Medical student Ora Raymond published her first author paper in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. The study is titled "Use of artificial intelligence to track platelet-rich plasma treatment outcomes in females with nonscarring alopecia: A case series."
Dr. Lindsey Sloan
2024 American Cancer Society Researchers Rising Star
Dr. Sloan was named the American Cancer Society's 2024 ResearcHERS Rising Star. This award showcases Dr. Sloan's accomplishments and excellence in cancer research. ResearcHERS is a movement that engages women to raise funds to directly support female cancer researchers.
Dr. Shahnaz Sultan
American Gastroenterology Association Governing Board
Dr. Sultan was selected as Councillor for Clinical Research for the American Gastroenterology Association's governing board. She was voted in for her excellence in research and leadership in the AGA.
