The NIH recently awarded $2.5 million over 5 years to the University of Minnesota to fund the “Minnesota Precision Medicine CKD & Resilient Diabetes Recruiting Site: Engagement, Enrollment & Ethics (Minn-KPMP)." Minn-KPMP will be a recruitment site for the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), a coalition of leading research teams using precision medicine to develop new therapies for kidney disease. Minn-KPMP is led by Patrick Nachman, MD, Director of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.
The "Bridging the Rural Justice Gap: Innovating & Scaling Up Civil Access to Justice in Alaska" project, a collaboration between the University of Minnesota Medical School, Alaska Legal Services Corporation, the American Bar Foundation, and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, explores the Community Justice Worker model — a promising solution to these justice gaps. Dr. Michele Statz is the principal investigator for this CIVIC Planning Grant.

An article in the November issue of AAMC Journal of Academic Medicine addressed the importance of understanding barriers women face and why promotions and opportunities for growth are especially challenging for women of color. As academic leaders coming from underrepresented groups, the authors are aware that traditional approaches to reducing this bias have not worked well. They address solutions to ensure the academic pathway is supportive while also providing several recommendations for solutions. The article was co-authored by Dr. Mary Owen.
The National Cancer Institute awarded a $2.9 million R01 grant to pool and analyze existing germline genomic and epidemiologic data from the Childhood Cancer and Leukemia International Consortium (CLIC) and other publicly available data sources. Led by Drs. Logan Spector (Medical School) and Saonli Basu (School of Public Health), the resulting large, integrated and diverse dataset (and the infrastructure to support and analyze it) will help accelerate data-driven discoveries about the underlying genetic and non-genetic causes of childhood cancer.
Dr. Hyun Kim presented the results of his retrospective research, "People with ILD living in rural areas do not appear to have greater risk for worse outcomes compared with those in urban areas," at the 2022 CHEST Annual Meeting. In the Midwest, which included Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota, M Health Fairview Health - Acute Rehabilitation Center was ranked highest of 10 centers in the region. On September 13, 2020, The Center for the Art of Medicine, led by Dr. Jon Hallberg, released its first Twin Cities PBS Original, "Hippocrates Cafe: Reflections on the Pandemic," which won a regional Emmy award. Now the second production, "Art + Medicine: Speaking of Race," has also received a regional Emmy!
