It doesn't matter if a disease is rare if it happens to someone you care about. Four years ago, Brock Groh was diagnosed with a rare degenerative genetic disorder, adrenoleukodystrophy. He received a cord blood transplant and is now living normal life as a nine-year-old. Because Brock's doctor, Troy Lund, is also a researcher working on more effective treatments and outcomes for children with the disorder, Brock's family helped start X out ALD to raise funds for the UMN Leukodystrophy Research Center.
This fall, the University of Minnesota (U of M) Medical School’s Experimental Surgical Services Laboratory (ESS) celebrated its 40th anniversary. Housed within the Department of Surgery, ESS is the only public pre-clinical research center in the country, and is at the forefront of medical research, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field of surgery by testing and perfecting medical devices and surgical techniques before they go to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for commercial approval.

Minnesota just became the first state to mandate CMV testing in newborns! Dr. Mark Schleiss led a groundbreaking study last year that showed that CMV could be tested for with high accuracy, leading to early diagnosis in babies with the virus that can cause deafness in 20% of cases. His work helped catapult us to this exciting moment!

The Duluth Campus' Gateways to Medicine and Research for Indigenous Students received a $750,000 award from Genentech to support a new master's degree program with 2 tracks (medical and research). Dr. Brooke Cunningham is now Commissioner of Health for the state of Minnesota. She was previously the assistant commissioner of the health equity bureau. "Dr. Cunningham’s passion and expertise for health equity will help us build a more affordable, equitable health care system that serves all Minnesotans,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.
